Maldives' Family Court said that it is handling a case involving a woman who entered into three marriages outside the court without officially registering any of the unions.
The matter was highlighted during Wednesday's parliamentary Regulation Review Committee meeting where members raised concerns over the increasing number of people who evade paying child support and get married overseas without registering their marriage in local courts.
In response to the concerns, Family Court's Legal Officer Ahmed Mausoom said there have been very sad incidents that occurred due to out of court and unregistered marriages.
"One wife having three husbands. One woman has three husbands. Situations like this are likely," he said.
Explaining how this happened, Mausoom said the woman had her first marriage abroad and broke off the marriage amongst themselves when she was unable to register the marriage in Maldives.
After that, she went abroad and married another man. Later on, when she went to get the second marriage registered in court, it was discovered that documents from her first marriage were with the court as well. However, before a decision could be made regarding those two marriages, she then married a third person, Mausoom said.
"This is very dangerous. This could mislead our genealogy. A lot of unwanted results could come out. So this is something that needs to be looked at very seriously," Mausoom said.
He also said that such cases are increasing, and stressed that permits must be sought from the Family Court before getting married abroad, but that not many people get the permit made.
