President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assigned the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to complete the renovation of "Orange Hiya," the building in Hulhumale' where the Thalassemia Centre will be relocated.
The decision follows protests by thalassemia patients and their families over inadequate services at the existing Thalassemia Centre. In response, the President personally visited the facility to assess the situation and listen to concerns.
Speaking on the President's podcast "Rayyithunnaa Eku" [With Citizens], President Muizzu acknowledged that while he was aware of the issues faced by thalassemia patients during his campaign, he did not realize the extent of the deterioration.
He affirmed his commitment to addressing the matter, stating that efforts are underway to improve the centre, including securing necessary resources and budgetary support for new testing equipment.
The President said that the Thalassemia Centre will operate on a floor of the Orange Hiya building, previously used as a Covid-19 facility.
However, the company originally contracted for the renovation failed to complete even half the work, and its contract has since expired.
President Muizzu said that the project has been handed over to MNDF, which will follow the same design and complete the work by April 28.
Additionally, President Muizzu announced that Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will establish an exclusive bus stop at Orange Hiya, ensuring free transportation for patients.
Furthermore, he revealed that the Thalassemia Centre has been operating without a Director General since 2017. To address this, Ahmed Mausoom, an experienced health management professional, has been appointed as the new Director General of the Thalassemia Centre.
