President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said today that the development of a yacht marina in Haa Alifu Uligan, where foreign yachts frequently dock in the future, will begin within the next six months.
His remarks were made during a meeting with the people of Uligan during his three day trip to the islands of Haa Alifu atoll. Uligan was the final stop of the trip to the atoll.
Speaking with locals, the President said Uligan has been a popular destination for yachts for a long time, and that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to establish a yacht marina.
Referring to the meeting held with the island council, the President said MPL had also said in the meeting that yacht marina's development would begin within six months.
"A destination for yachts. A reality that has existed for ages. There is an MoU with MPL. God willing, our hope is that all phase will be completed, including financing and all the detailed work," President Muizzu said.
The president also said that the government's desire is to make this project a permanent and expanding economic activity specifically for Uligan.
“In today's meeting, the CEO of MPL said that the practical work of the yacht marina will begin within a maximum of six months," the President said.
While 100-150 yachts dock in Uligan annually, adequate services have not been provided to these yachts so far.
According to MPL's CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, the yacht marina will bring many financial benefits to Uligan and the entire atoll.
He also said that companies from Turkey and China have expressed interest in building the yacht marina. Wajeeh stated that even if foreign parties develop this marina under contract financing, MPL will be the party to operate the facility.
