The project is to be completed within three years and nine months.
The Maldivian government has signed a major project to redevelop Addu Link Road, originally built 22 years ago to connect the islands of Addu City with a modernised road.
The Ministry of Infrastructure today awarded the design and build contract to Road Development Corporation (RDC) to develop the Addu Link Road, and roads connected to it, as well as to establish drainage systems there.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the ministry this morning.
The agreement was signed by Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthhalib on behalf of the Ministry and RDC was represented by Managing Director Ali Zuhair.
The Infrastructure Ministry said the project, which costs MVR 829.8 million from the state budget, was awarded to be completed in three years and nine months.
Today's ceremony was attended by South Addu, Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi, North Feydhoo MP Ismail Nizar, and North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Sinan.
- Modernise the link road
- Tar or pave of 67.58 km of CTB roads
- Establish drainage systems in Feydhoo
- Develop pavements
- Install road indications and sign boards. The development of the 16km Addu Link Road connecting Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo Feydhoo, Feydhoo and Gan began in 2001 during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom. The project was completed and the road was put into use in 2003.
The road was constructed under a USD 7.9 million loan from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The total 12.5 km link road was constructed by Horgaard and Shulz, a consortium between companies from Denmark and Lebanon. Renowned New Zealand civil architect, John Smart, was responsible for the planning and design of the road.
The long road, which was a great convenience for the people of Addu City, has not undergone any significant development since, and has now deteriorated in condition severely.
