Immigration arrests US citizen living in Maldives without visa

Immigration Department has taken under custody an American citizen who has been living in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale allegedly without a visa for years.

In a joint operation with Police, Immigration arrested John Seyfert late Monday, who has been in business in Hulhumale for several years.

Police spokesperson confirmed the arrest on Tuesday but did not provide additional details.

According to the spokesperson of Immigration, the joint team had inspected ten individuals during the operation and taken four people, who do not possess visas, under custody. The spokesperson added that Immigration has not made a decision regarding their deportation yet nor did he confirm that the detained include an American citizen.

Mihaaru understands that John Seyfert is a guesthouse businessman in Hulhumale. He has been living in the reclaimed suburb for several years and has been active in community events.
