Maldives Immigration and Maldives Police Service arrested a Bangladeshi national over illegally running an overcrowded guesthouse which housed over 100 undocumented expatriates.

According to Immigration, Mannan Mia, 29, was arrested on November 21 during a routine inspection conducted jointly with the police in capital Male' City. The authority disclosed that Mia was found to be in violation of the Maldives Immigration Act and running an unregistered guesthouse.

A video of the guesthouse, released by Immigration, depicted a building mostly made from tin, with 11 ramshackle, barracks-style rooms measuring 90 square feet each. While the makeshift beds were made from metal pipes and wood, the rooms and toilets were unhygienic, poorly ventilated and unsafe for human dwelling.

Immigration stated that the illegal immigrants have since been granted the opportunity to register.
