Table tennis veteran [Seaweed] Ahmed Latheef has won a Silver medal at the TT Masters Games in Thailand, and become the first Maldivian to win a Masters medal in TT in the Maldives.
Table tennis veteran [Seaweed] Ahmed Latheef has won a Silver medal at the TT Masters Games in Thailand, and become the first Maldivian to win a Masters medal in TT in the Maldives.
Latheef won the Silver medal in the Over 70 Singles category of the games. He secured a place in the quarterfinals through winning both matches in the group stage. After winning the quarterfinals and semifinals, he lost to a Thailand player in the finals with 1-3 sets.
"This is a proud moment for me, and my family. It is a great honour to receive a medal in the Masters category," he said.
Masters category sees senior and experienced players competing. In some other sports, this is referred to as the Veterans' category.
The Games, where table tennis, badminton and tennis were played, featured players from Maldives, UK, Australia, Austria, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Turkey.
In addition to Latheef, five other Maldivians participated in the Games. This includes two brothers of Latheef, Ibrahim Latheef and Mohamed Latheef. Other competitors include Ali Adam [Thaalhafili Alibe], Hussain Rasheed and Ahmed Ibrahim [Reethi Ahmed].
