In the investigation into the wrongful allocation of flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, charges are to be pressed against then Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government-led Housing Ministry senior officials, Mihaaru News reports.

As per a senior official of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), those to be pressed charges against in the case include former State Minister at Housing Ministry Akram Kamaluddeen, former Senior Executive Director Mohamed Arif, former Senior Executive Director Lirgam Waheed and then and present Director General Ahmed Vishan Naseem.

The official said a decision would be reached soon about pressing charges against these four.

Passports of these four individuals were also seized last week on request from ACC. The four are also accused in the ongoing Binveriya housing scheme case.

In a press release issued last night, ACC said that currently they are in the duty prosecution case with the Prosecutor General's Office in relation to this case.

They said that they would be expediting pressing charges against those necessary.

ACC conducted a major investigation into the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, after which they declared only 20 percent of the first 4000 flat recipients were valid. They subsequently ordered the current administration's Housing Ministry to review the list.

Following this, Housing Ministry commenced review of all 20,000 applicants for flats in the first round.

In a recent development, the Prosecutor General's Office has ordered the ACC and Police to conduct investigations into the Binveriya and Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, where there are allegations that flats and land were unduly awarded to recipients who do not meet requirements.
