Maldivian authorities seized a Sri Lankan vessel carrying 468 kilograms of drugs after it entered the country's waters illegally.

In a press conference held today, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau said that the vessel was seized by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s Coast Guard at around 00:45 hrs this morning, following an intelligence tip off.

Shujau detailed that there were five Sri Lankan men on board the vessel, and that it was moved to HDh. Kulhudhuffushi harbour this morning under Police and Coast Guard's custody, where it was searched.

A total of 468.6 kg of suspected drugs were recovered from the vessel at 09:30 hrs today, during a search carried out by Kulhudhuffushi City Police officers and MNDF's Coast Guard personnel,” Shujau said.

He said that preliminary tests show the contents to be 344 kilograms of meth and 124.6 kilograms of cocaine, and that the street value of these drugs is at around MVR one billion.

During the press conference, Police displayed a video of all the seized drugs as well.

The Drug Enforcement Unit and Kulhudhuffushi Police Station are now investigating the matter.
