Abbas Shareef was appointed as Prosecutor General (PG) during the third extraordinary sitting of Parliament, where 85 members voted in favor of his appointment.
Parliament today unanimously approved the appointment of Abbas Shareef, the Legal Secretary at the President's Office, as the new Prosecutor General (PG).
The decision was made during the third extraordinary sitting of Parliament, where 85 members voted in favor of his appointment.
While there were six applicants to the post of PG, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had nominated Abbas alone, and forwarded his name to parliament for approval. The nomination was reviewed by the Judiciary Committee of parliament, which awarded Abbas a score of 93.91 percent following his interview.
Abbas Shareef is a seasoned lawyer with extensive experience in the legal field. He studied law at the University of Tasmania and has previously served as legal representation for former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Abdulla Yameen.
He also served as a High Court Judge from 2011 to 2015.
The position of Prosecutor General fell vacant after Hussain Shameem resigned from the post on August 22. Shameem's resignation followed a decision by the Judiciary Committee to remove him following allegations against him.
Historically, no Prosecutor General has completed a full five-year term. Former Prosecutors Ahmed Muizzu, Muhutaz Muhusin, and Aishath Bisham also resigned before their terms expired.
