Speaker of the People's Majlis and former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he and his newly formed party will be part of the incoming government when the President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu takes oath of office on November 17.
Speaking during the sitting of the Majlis held last Wednesday, Nasheed who was chairing the session said that Cabinet Minsters of the current government were attempting to create a negative image of President-elect Muizzu and the government he will formulate in November.
"Some cabinet ministers have texted international dignitaries and conveyed negative impressions about the future government. These dignitaries have relayed the messages to me and I have responded saying that I am a part of the new government so how bad can it be," Nasheed said.
In addition to Nasheed, interim Chairperson of The Democrats and Member of Parliament for West Henveiru constituency Hassan Latheef recently claimed that The Democrats would be part of the Muizzu government.
The Democrats who secured the third most number of votes in the first round of the presidential election with 15,000 votes, proposed conditions to PPM/PNC as well as the MDP in exchange for their support in the second round of elections. Their proposal to the PPM was to provide a written document about The Democrats' share in a PPM/PNC government. The condition they presented to the MDP was an agreement to hold a public referendum regarding the system of government before the run-off.
As neither side responded to their proposals before the given deadline, Democrats decided not to support either candidate in the second round.
Responding to a question from "Mihaaru" about the agreement with The Democrats, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said there is no agreement to allocate any senior government positions to the Democrats.
Muizzu however said that the two parties had agreed to dedicate some government positions to The Democrats with the objective of working together in the atolls.
