Dr. Muizzu's swearing-in ceremony will be conducted as requested: Nasheed

Speaker of parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said that the swearing-in ceremony for Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to take his oath of office as President of the Maldives for the next five years would be conducted as requested by Dr. Muizzu and his team.

Speaking to the media after his meeting with the president-elect, speaker Nasheed said that he had given assurance to Dr. Muizzu and extended full cooperation as required by the parliament in this matter.

According to Article 114 of the Constitution the president-elect and vice president-elect is to take oath of office in a sitting of the parliament.

According to the Parliament Secretariat, preparations are being made to conduct this sitting of the parliament on Friday November 17.

Dr. Muizzu said that the meeting with the parliament speaker at the Parliament Secretariat was successful. He said that speaker Nasheed had assured him of the parliament's cooperation in forming his government, taking the oath of office, and in other matters. Dr. Muizzu added that the speaker had also guaranteed the completion of the current term of the parliament.

"Majority and Minority leaders of the parliament said they would continue to hold the government accountable in their role as opposition parties while prioritizing national interests above all else," said Dr. Muizzu.

This is the first time that president-elect Dr. Muizzu has met with the parliament speaker after his win in the election held last Saturday.

Dr. Muizzu had also called on the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to fulfil their role as a responsible opposition party, during the victory celebration held on Monday.
