Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Women's Wing Leader and Addu Meedhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam has submitted an amendment to the Constitution seeking to set a quota of 33 percent for women members commencing from the 2029 parliamentary term.

The proposed bill states that the constituencies which will fall within the 33 percent quota will be determined through a draw between all included constituencies.

This draw is to be conducted in a manner that would facilitate women parliamentarians to represent all constituencies over the required number of terms. The policies governing this draw must be elaborated through a law.

Once all constituencies are covered by the 33 percent, the parliament has to decide on how to proceed regarding further elections.

The bill goes on to say that the intention in submitting this bill is to confirm women's inclusion in elected parliament seats, broaden women's roles in efforts to protect national and citizens' interests, inclusion of women's voices in important decisions of the nation, increase women's involvement amongst the populace, facilitate opportunities for women in the field of politics and to increase women's representation in politics.

Democrats MP Ali Azim has also proposed an addition of a clause to Article 72 of the Constitution. In this, it is stipulated that 1 out of every 10 constituencies that political parties are presenting candidates for must be allocated for a female candidate.
