The family of the victim is now preparing to take him to India for further treatment.
A youth from Raa atoll Meedhoo sustained severe injuries after being struck in the neck by a needlefish while snorkeling near Faafu atoll at night.
The incident occurred two days ago while the youth, who fishes aboard a Madduvari vessel, was snorkeling. According to his family, the needlefish attack caused significant damage to a major nerve in his neck.
He is currently being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male'. After initial care in the emergency room, he has been transferred to the ward.
"He is unable to move his left arm and his legs can only move slightly. During surgery, the nerve must be closely observed, but this is unavailable here, so he has been advised to seek treatment abroad," the family said.
The family is now preparing to take him to India for further treatment.
Needlefish attacks, although not common, are known to occur in Maldives.
