Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has responded to doubts raised about granting land plots from Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru lagoon.

The current government earlier announced over 19,000 eligible applicants under the state-initiated housing schemes ‘Binveriyaa’ and ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ will receive lands from Hulhumalé along with Gulhifalhu and Giraavaru lagoon.

President Solih reaffirmed his commitment to reclaim the necessary lands without significant delays to ensure that eligible applicants receive their land quickly.

During the presidential debate on Saturday, September 2, president Solih said that the citizens of Malé were neglected in all previous social housing initiatives. He argued that it was unfair to doubt the current government's housing initiatives, which aims to provide shelter for them.

President Solih also defended criticism laid on the current government’s decision to grant land plots from Malé region freely to its citizens. He claimed Malé citizens had a right to affordable living as much as others.

“We are granting plots to Malé citizens from Giraavaru lagoon and Gulhifalhu. Malé citizens remained neglected previously because housing solutions were open for the rest,” Solih added.

Solih assured the development of additional housing flats in Hulhumalé from the planned area for reclamation.

At the debate, President Solih highlighted housing detriments as the primary socio-economic issue and added that it was his administration that sufficiently addressed the cause. He also said the decision to award land for Malé citizens falls under the government’s comprehensive plan of resolving nationwide housing issues.

“There is no problem in issuing land from Hulhumalé, Giraavaru lagoon and Gulhifalhu. Those who speak against it do not wish well for Malé citizens. God willing, we will resolve housing issues under our governance.”
