Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) has announced that the application window for Male' locals to apply for social housing plots will be publicly opened on June 2022.

The first time an official statement regarding housing issues faced by Male' locals was addressed by the Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during his presidential address at the 2022 parliamentary opening session.

The president had pledged social housing of 1,000 plots from Hulhumale', 2,000 plots from Gulhifalhu and another 2,000 plots from Giraavaru will be exclusively awarded to Male' locals.

Meanwhile, on last Tuesday, Mr. Akram Kamaaluddin, the State Minister of National Development and Heritage Committee affirmed that the application window will be opened sometime in upcoming June.

Earlier, after it was announced by HDC that it has put a total of 60 plots for sale exclusively for Male' locals, criticism and frustration mounted against lack of similar opportunity from Male' City.

Eligibility criteria for the housing scheme is less stringent as previous such schemes, while the Minister of National Planning Mr. Mohamed Aslam noted that only for conditions will be checked for eligibility which include;

- the applicant must be a born and registered local of Male' City

- the applicant in their proprietorship, or through inheritance, must not be a title holder for a land or plot exceeding 600 square feet, and;

- should the applicant become a proprietor, or receive through inheritance, a land or plot as such specified, must relinquish their proprietorship to the state

- do not have in their possession a place of accommodation in Male' City
