VAM President Mohamed Latheef has been re-elected as President of the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) for a third term.
Latheef had initially taken on the role last year after a three-year hiatus, stepping in for the remaining term of the previous president, Mohamad Ranesh, who resigned. His current term is set to expire in April this year.
The election was held following amendments to the general regulations and an increase in the number of executive committee (exco) posts.
The exco now consists of 15 members, and the nomination deadline expired on January 27.
For all posts, only one candidate applied, except for the ordinary members of the exco. Five positions as ordinary members were up for election, with six candidates contesting. Experienced coach Ahmed Adeel (Beybe) did not secure a position in the exco.
Other positions were filled without the need for an election, as only one candidate ran for each. Mohamed Sajid (Kattey), a seasoned coach, was elected as Senior Vice-President. Sajidwas previously Vice-President during the last term.
The new VAM Vice-Presidents include:
- Mohamed Sajid (Senior Vice President)
- Izzat Waheed (Vice President, Administrative)
- Ali Latheef (Vice President, Volleyball)
- Abdulla Nasheed (Vice President, Beach Volleyball)
- Aaidha Abdul Hakeem (Female Vice President)
Other board members include Mohamed Sharaf, Mohamed Fahmy, Ahmed Nasheed, Fathuhulla Waheed (Fallo), Sofwan Ahmed, and Mohamed Rameez. Mohamed Saeed has been appointed as the Secretary General, and Mohamed Rameez is the Treasurer.
Following the election of female member Aishath Sakeenath, Latheef said that his top priorities for the four-year term includes implementing a long-term plan for volleyball.
As Vice-President of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) and President of the Central Asian Volleyball Confederation (CAVA), Latheef emphasized the importance of strengthening youth development and expanding the talent pool for the national teams.
Latheef's first term as VAM President began in 2016. During his tenure, the previous government attempted to strip him of his exco role and handed over the association's management to a committee headed by then Sports Commissioner Heena Ahmed Saleem.
However, the World Volleyball Federation (FIVB) rejected this decision. Under Latheef’s leadership, VAM elections were successfully held in 2021.
