President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that an agreement is being signed with a Chinese company next month to build a major fish packing factory in the island of Fiyoari in Gaafy Dhaalu atoll.
During his ongoing visit to Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, the President said in his address in Fiyoari that fisheries on the island and elsewhere in the atoll is the most key industry. Hence, he stated his belief that the best thing to do for Fiyoari would be to do something related to this industry.
In accordance with his pledge during the presidential elections to build a fish factory in Fiyoari, an agreement will be signed with a Chinese company next month to officially commence these efforts, he said.
The factory would be equipped with:
- facilities to package 100 tonnes of canned tuna a day
- cold storage facilities of 3000 tonne capacity
- a 50 tonne ice plant
The President said that financing is being arranged for this, and preparations are underway to sign a contract with a Chinese company. As discussions have progressed so far, he said it is likely the agreement will be signed in February and work commenced in the next two months.
The President highlighted that the establishment of this factory would bring development to the fisheries industry in the atoll.
