ACC to look into financial case concerning MBA

A financial case concerning the Maldives Basketball Association (MBA) has been submitted to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), which has now started a probe into the matter.

A financial case concerning the Maldives Basketball Association (MBA) has been submitted to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), which has now started a probe into the matter.

Many issues concerning MBA was submitted to ACC on November 4 by a private individual involved in basketball.

Of these, ACC accepted the case concerning financial irregularities. The allegations against MBA say that the association had through deception taken money twice for similar activities from the Sports Ministry.

The case submitted to ACC statest hat the annual report shows that on 11 December 2022, MBA had received MVR 195,371.40 from the Sports Ministry to cover food and accommodation for two Sri Lankan clubs that had been invited to come for that year's national tournament.

However, no foreign teams had competed in the national tournament held in December that year.

For the Zahir Naseer Memorial Invitational Tournament held in January 2023, the association had taken MVR 195,371.40 to cover accommodation and food costs for two Sri Lankan teams again on January 8, 2023, their financial report shows, the case reads.

The complaint states that getting funding for two teams in the first instance when the two did not compete in the tournament amounts to wrongful acquisition of funds.

MBA, meanwhile, rejects these allegations. MDA General Secretary Visham Rasheed said that no foreign teams had been brought for national tournaments at any time, nor were funds sought for such a reason for the national tournament.
