The Criminal Court has ruled to allow Thahmeen Ahmed, who is accused in relation to the assassination attempt made on Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, to submit evidence to the court in his defense.
The state has filed terrorism charges against Thahmeen Ahmed from Gaafu Alifu Kondey, along with Mujaz Ahmed from Malé, Ali Haisham from Noonu atoll Manadhoo, Fahumee Ali from Gaafu Alifu Vilingili, Ishaag from Malé, and Mohamed Nazim from Alifu Alifu Maalhos, for their alleged involvement in the assassination attempt on Speaker Nasheed in May 2021.
As evidence was not submitted on his behalf earlier due to his lawyer's negligence, Thahmeen Ahmed had requested an opportunity to submit evidence again.
Despite the initial denial of Thahmeen's request, the court reconsidered and granted him the opportunity to submit evidence after his former lawyer wrote a letter to the court stating that evidence was not submitted earlier due to a mistake.
The state has no objections to allowing Thahmeen to present evidence again, and therefore, the court has decided to grant him the opportunity to do so.
The court gave the state three days to file its submissions on the evidence.
While the trial has begun, the deposition that was scheduled to take place yesterday was postponed to give Thahmeen the opportunity to present evidence. Adhuham Ahmed, who was involved in the bombing, was found guilty and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
