Associates of former Maldivian President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed have accused President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of intentionally delaying justice in the case of Nasheed's attempted assassination, which occurred two years ago.
"On the second anniversary of the assassination attempt...Mohamed Nasheed, Eva Abdulla, who is the Vice President of the Parliament and Nasheed's niece, took to Twitter to denounce President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his handling of the case," reads the article.
MP Hassan Lateef has accused the government of covering up mistakes made during the investigation into the assassination attempt on Nasheed. "President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is unable to guarantee justice for President Nasheed," he stated.
Former Managing Director of the State Trading Organisation and political ally of Nasheed within the Maldivian Democratic Party, Hussain Amru, has claimed that the failure to bring those responsible to justice is a deliberate criminal act.
The prosecution has charged six individuals in connection with the attack, and to date, the only person convicted is Mohamed Adhuham, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
The remaining five accused individuals are currently on trial in the Maldives' Criminal Court, which is scheduled to conclude on August 31. However, Abbas Faiz, the UK representative appointed by President Solih to investigate the assassination attempt, recently expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities' explanation for the delay in the trial.
"After meeting with Criminal Court Registrar Hussain Rasheed in March, Abbas Faiz stated that the Maldivian judiciary had not provided any credible justification for delaying the trial," according to the article.
