Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the derogatory remarks made about autistic individuals during a Raajje TV programme, "Kaalaabaisa."
The program, which featured political criticism, included comments that many found offensive and disrespectful towards people with autism.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, HRCM said that all people, including those with disabilities, have the same human rights as others in society.
The Commission called for media outlets to ensure that their content does not violate the dignity and rights of any individual. It also urged the relevant authorities to investigate such incidents.
Raajje TV has since issued an apology for the comments, which were made by former Colonel Ahmed Fayaz Ali (Papa Fayaz) and former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla during the live program, hosted by Hussain Rameez.
Many have condemned Nasheed for encouraging Fayaz's comments made against people with autism and down syndrome with widespread criticism on social media.
