Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau (Bochey) has proposed an amendment to shorten the first session of Parliament and go on recess during Ramadan.

As per Parliament regulations, the legislative body operates in three sessions annually:

- The first session runs from February to May 15

- The second session runs from June to August 15

- The third session runs from October to the end of November

Under MP Rifau’s proposed amendment, the first session would begin in January and conclude by the end of the month.

The second session would then run from April to the end of July, while the third session would remain from September to the end of November.

The proposal stipulates that Parliament would go on recess during Ramadan after concluding the session at the end of the month. As this year’s first session commenced in February, the second and third sessions would follow the revised timeline if the amendment is approved.
