A speedboat carrying 15 people from R. Ungoofaaru to Sh. Milandhoo capsized yesterday.
Ungoofaaru council's president Abdulla Rasheed told Mihaaru News that among the passengers were four women and four children.
The boat is said to have capsized around 05:30 pm local time near Milandhoo and Maakandoodhoo.
"Milandhoo council's president shared that a part of the launch came apart and caused it to sink," Rasheed said.
At the time of the incident, the vessel was being driven by a Milandhoo man married to an Ungoofaaru woman. According to the council president, they were travelling to Milandhoo with relatives of the woman's family for the weekend.
All passengers on board the speedboat were rescued. However, some of them were treated at Milandhoo health centre for psychological care, Rasheed said.
"Women and children would [likely] be heavily impacted from such an incident. So they were taken there as a precautionary measure. We've received information that they're all doing well now," he also said.
