A civil suit has been filed against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) senior activist Mariyam Zubair (Mandhi) over remarks made regarding President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's child during the ongoing serial protests in Male' organized by the party.

In a statement, the law firm of former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, who represents the President’s family, stated that the remarks attributed to the President’s son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu, could endanger his life and wellbeing while also negatively impacting his education and future.

The statement further claimed that the comments violated the protection and dignity guaranteed under the Child Rights Act and the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of the Child.

Azima said First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has filed the case against Mariyam, asserting that the remarks deprived her of her constitutional right to protect her family’s name and reputation.

At a press conference held last week on behalf of the President's family, Azima announced that they had decided to sue Mariyam, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and the party in the case.

Reading a statement from the First Lady, Azima said that political differences with the President had led to the spread of false statements regarding their son, affecting his education, future, and social development.

“I take this opportunity to state that Umair does not and has never smoked vape or even tobacco in any way,” First Lady Sajidha Mohamed said in her statement last Saturday.

Chairperson Fayyaz is being sued for allegedly encouraging and posting about the incident on social media, while the MDP is being sued on the grounds that the protest organizers should be held accountable for the situation, Azima said.

In response, MDP has accused the President’s family and lawyer of defaming the child and has stated that they will take the matter to the relevant authorities.
