The parliament has scheduled a sitting for Sunday evening, December 3, to elect a new Deputy Speaker following Eva Abdulla's resignation.

North-Galolhu MP and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla submitted her resignation during Sunday morning's sitting, where the voting for her no-confidence motion had been scheduled.

She announced her resignation while concluding her defense statement at the parliament sitting.

After accepting her resignation, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam announced an additional sitting has been scheduled for Sunday evening at 8:00 pm to elect a new Deputy Speaker.

Members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had however contended Eva's resignation, claiming it was not possible amid an ongoing no-confidence motion against her. However, Speaker Aslam contested this stating the matter can no longer proceed due to her resignation.

A total of 49 members signed the no-confidence motion submitted against Eva the second time.
