National airline Maldivian, on Thursday, denied allegations that the company issued credit facilities for the transportation of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members for campaign visits regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Some medias reported that Maldivian issued a credit facility of MVR 150,000 to transport supporters of MDP candidate Mohamed Wisam to Gan, Laamu Atoll.

A tweet by Maldivian denied these allegations, stating that the company did not issue tickets on credit for any parties or candidates.

Island Aviation Services Ltd (IAS), the operator of Maldivian, had previously signed an agreement with Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) issuing a credit facility for the campaign transportation of PPM's presidential candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during the 2018 election. The expenses of these trips amounted to MVR 4.8 million.

Island Aviation submitted a case to Elections Commission (EC) over PPM's failure to repay this amount.

PPM has since settled MVR 1 million owed to Island Aviation, with a pending payment of MVR 3.8 million.

An official of IAS revealed that the money is owed by PPM for the travel expenses of supporters from all over Maldives to their big campaign rally held in capital Male' prior to the election. The official further stated that some flights were chartered by PPM as well.
