President Solih launches Mental Health Centre in IGMH

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated the first Mental Health Centre in Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Monday.

President Solih has pledged to create a national mental health institute and ensuring Aasandha (state insurance scheme) for mental illnesses, within the first 100 days of his term in office.

The health centre was opened to provide safe and trustworthy services to treat people with mental disorders.

The newly established centre will offer outpatient and inpatient services for the betterment of the national health sector. The former referring to procedures that require the patient to be admitted to the hospital and the latter services that are performed outside the premises of the hospital, or that do not require hospitalization.

The health centre will take a multidisciplinary approach described as a comprehensive and coordinated method used to manage the rehabilitation and compensation aspects of a claim.

Moreover, the health professionals at the institute will be able to identify the type of mental disorders and also provide fast services to those required. Psychological and medical treatments will be provided at the health care centre, depending on each case.

Rehabilitation and occupational therapy are also offered in the health centre to ensure that people with mental disorders to function in all their environments with their ability.

Outreach specialist services will be provided in the newly established Mental Health Centre to provide support to regional hospitals. The government has also announced plans to establish at least one mental health centre in each atoll in the Maldives.
