Maldives Police Service revealed on Tuesday that six suspects have been arrested over the theft of MVR 2.3 million near State Bank of India (SBI).

The perpetrators, who were donning helmets, stole the money from a passerby after threatening him with a sharp object on March 10. The stolen cash has not been recovered.

According to the Police, three of the arrested are minors while details about the remaining suspects were not revealed. Police, however, noted that the Criminal Court has extended the remand periods for everyone in custody.

Although a total of eight arrests were made regarding the burglary, two were released afterwards.

This was the first incident of this nature which took place shortly after the government mandated wearing of helmets for bikers crossing the Sinamale' Bridge.

The incident was also one of the most high-end thefts that occurred in Maldives recently.

In light of the recent upsurge in theft, burglary and mugging, Maldives Police Service have advised the public to transport large sums of money and cheques with the assistance of Police security.
