Salary increment for mayors, councillors proposed to parliament

The Parliament Committee on Public Finance, on Monday, proposed a raise in salary, increase in benefits, and an insurance package for mayors and council members.

Fuvahmulah North constituency MP Ali Shah presented the proposal at a committee meeting to raise salaries for councillors of Male’, Addu and Fuvahmulah cities. MP for Kulhudhuffushi constituency Abdul Gafoor Moosa backed the motion.

However, council members’ salaries can be raised once the committee’s decision is passed by the parliament.

If the proposition is passed, a mayor’s salary will be MVR 30,000, along with an MVR 10,000 living allowance, a total of MVR 40,000.

Deputy mayors will receive a total of MVR 35,000, which includes a salary of MVR 27,000 and an MVR 8,000 living allowance.

City council members will receive MVR 24,000, and a living allowance of MVR 6,000, a total of MVR 30,000.

During former president Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration, the parliament reduced mayors’ salaries to MVR 18,000, deputy mayors’ to MVR 14,000, and council members’ to MVR 11,500.

Prior to the deduction, mayors’ salaries were set at MVR 45,000, deputy mayors’ salaries were set at MVR 35,000, and city council members’ salaries were set at MVR 25,000.
