Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeed Mohamed's family members received flats under former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's mega social housing project 'Hiyaa'.

According to local media Mihaaru, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) member Yazmeed Mohamed, who is the younger brother to Yazeed, and his wife are among the family members who acquired social housing flats.

Moreover, Yazeed's four other siblings Yazeeda Mohamed, Shaziyya Mohamed, Yaznaa Mohamed and Mazeed Mohamed had each received a housing unit. Apart from his siblings, more of Yazeed's relatives have also been awarded social housing.

An informant of Mihaaru reported that some of Yazeed's family members who received the flats have been living in Capital City Male for a long duration while registered under their islands.

The informant went on to say that there are some who actually deserve flats.

However, the public is voicing concerns over state officials and their family members receiving the flats. Moreover, the public has begun alleging that a large number of people used political influence to unjustly receive the flats.

The former administration maintained secrecy over the identities of those who received the guarantees by stating that personal information could not be released.

Presidential committee to investigate issues related to the previous administration's controversial distribution of housing units, declared on Monday, that the committee is currently receiving many complaints in regards to the distribution.

However, Committee member and former Vice-President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, Ahmed Tholal did not specify whether Yazeed's matter was raised to the Committee.

The commission stated that they will take necessary action once they receive all the complaints regarding the scheme

According to Tholal, the commission is also investigating cases uncovered by local news publications.

Meanwhile, recently it surfaced that 37 members of Nilandhoo MP Dr Abdulla Haleel's relatives received the flats. But the MP states that this happened as he belongs to a large family from Nilandhoo.
