Maternity leave increased to 6 months for state employees

Speaking at the International Women’s Day event held at Maafushi on Thursday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that six months will be granted for all female civil servants as maternity leave.

Furthermore, the President also announced that male civil servants with the provision of one-month paternity leave to support their wives as part of government’s effort to support gender equality.

This new change is effective from Thursday, March 6.

Previously, three months were granted as maternity leave. Whereas as only three days were granted as paternity leave for state employees.

President Solih’s 100 day pledges included to give six months maternity leave for all female civil servants and one month paid paternity leave for male civil servants.

Currently, more than 13,000 women are employed in the civil service sector of the government. President Solih stated that it is everyone’s duty to work for empowerment of women in the society.

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme is #BalanceforBetter which raises awareness against bias, and to take action for equality.

President Solih unveiled a women's day monument in Maafushi ahead of International Women's Day.

Along with First Lady Fazna Ahmed, several cabinet ministers also took part in the special ceremony held in Maafushi.
