Maldives Police Service on Tuesday, confirmed the launch of an investigation into Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA)'s Governor Ahmed Naseer over alleged obstruction of justice.

Police have stated that complaints submitted to the institution against Governor Naseer are being investigated, however, further details were not disclosed.

The investigation began at the time when the Governor attended the Parliament’s Financial Committee’s summon, over the sudden impeachment of MMA’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU)’s former head Abdulla Ashraf without proper cause.

FIU is an independent agency of MMA established under the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act. The main function of FIU is to receive financial transaction reports from various reporting institutions, analyse them and as appropriate, disseminate valuable financial information to law enforcement agencies and regulatory authorities.

The power to appoint the head of FIU rests upon MMA's Governor.

Prior to Ashraf, Ibrahim Athif Shakoor held the post. Shakoor resigned in 2015 amidst FIU’s report implicating Shakoor in the graft corruption of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
