Vilufushi MP and Jumhooree Party member, Riyaz Rasheed was elected as the Chair of the parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions on Wednesday, after Rozaina Adam was removed from the committee.

Rasheed was elected by the joint support from the members of JP and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), receiving a total of seven votes in his favour.

PPM nominated Rasheed after Rozaina failed to summon Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham and Acting Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed to the committee, regarding the arrest of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Rozaina, however, stated that she did not summon them as Yameen’s case is currently ongoing in court.

Mohamed Aslam, the parliamentary group leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and MP for Hithadhoo North constituency, stated that Rozaina’s name was removed from the committee on her request.

MDP, on the other hand, had nominated Henveiru Central MP Ali Azim to chair the committee.

The Committee on Independent Institutions consists of 11 members.
