Former Elections Commission (EC) member Mohamed Shakeel was appointed by opposition-aligned Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) as their Secretary General, on Tuesday.
According to PPM, they appointed Shakeel as the SG through a unanimous decision from the party's Council.
Shakeel had served as State Minister of Economic Development during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.
PPM’s Parliamentary Group Leader and Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan publicly announced Shakeel’s appointment and extended his congratulations.
The post was formerly served by the previous State Minister of Energy and Environment Abdul Matheen. However, Matheen had resigned from the post approximately a month after assuming the position.
Shakeel played a key role in defending Yameen and his administration. Notably, Shakeel is one of the leading members of the recent protests organised by the opposition coalition.
