Many expatriate workers congregated on Sunday at the Galolhu ward police station to submit complaints against their employing company over non-payment of salary.

Maldives Police Service revealed that 56 expat workers gathered to lodge complaints, and after receiving relevant information the police instructed the expat workers to submit the case to the Labour Relations Authority.

It is unknown which company the labourers were employed at.

Foreign labourers not being paid their due salary has become a prevalent issue in the country, with embassies continuously receiving complaints.

The government of Bangladesh, one of the largest source of foreign labour, is currently appealing its citizens against immigrating to Maldives for work. Bangladesh's Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment recently notified agencies against sending labourers to Maldives. Bangladesh stated that it took the measures in accordance with the instruction from the country's High Commission in Maldives.
