Male City Council announced that W Construction was fined MVR 500,000, over the death of a young girl caused by a falling cement bag from a building the company was developing.

Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef noted that measures were taken against the company, following an immediate investigation in the wake of the incident.

However, according to local media Mihaaru, Mayor Shifa Mohamed made no statements about the measures taken despite numerous questions about the girl's death.

“We investigated immediately at the time the incident occurred and, following communications with the City Council, W Construction was fined MVR 500,000. This was the most severe measure we could take in accordance with the law,” said Deputy Mayor Shamau.

Moreover, he assured that although steps were taken by the City Council, the investigation into her death will not cease and that any ensuing criminal charges will be levied by the police.

Rawshan Jian, the elder daughter of two born to a family of Bangladeshi doctors, passed away on December 16, 2018, succumbing to injuries sustained from being struck by a cement bag that fell from the fifth floor of the Nalahiya Manzil construction site in capital city Male'.

Jian’s mother, Dr Farzana Hussein, appealed the Maldivian government to investigate the incident. Her parents, who work in Nilandhoo Hospital in Faafu Atoll, stated that they chose to return to Maldives in order to ensure justice for their child.
