Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Tuesday, spoke regarding the democratic journey of Maldives during the roundtable discussions hosted by the Atlantic Council.
During his address, Minister Shahid highlighted the difficulties Maldives faced in consolidating past democratic gains.
The foreign minister also guaranteed that the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih would be committed to upholding the principles of democracy and good governance.
Additionally, he stated that the government would work to strengthen democratic institutions tasked with ensuring the accountability of political leaders.
Minister Shahid is currently on an official state visit to USA upon the invitation of US Secretary of State Michael Richard Pompeo. This marks the first instance in which a Maldivian minister was invited to visit by the US Secretary of State.
The minister is accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Permanent Ambassador of Maldives to the United States of America, Ali Naseer Mohamed and foreign ministry officials.
