The government of Japan, on Tuesday, provided a construction grant to Rathafandhoo School in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) scheme.
The grant contract was signed between Japanese Ambassador Keiko Yanai and Principal of Rathafandhoo School Mohamed Abdulla, at a ceremony held in the Ministry of Education in the capital city of Male'.
The grant, which is equivalent to USD 81,757, will fund the construction of two classrooms and the establishment of a permanent set-up for a science laboratory. Rathafandhoo School will oversee the project which has an estimated completion time of one year.
The aim of the project is to eliminate classroom shortages for the existing 103 pupils in Rathafandhoo School and help manage increasing student population on the island. Additionally, the project will increase the school's capacity to conduct more extra-curricular activities.
The Japanese government has been providing assistance to Maldives for over 50 years in a range of sectors, including grassroots level initiatives to major infrastructure projects.
