The government, on Thursday, began financing undergraduate degrees for free.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched the programme at a ceremony held in Maldives National University (MNU).

Minister of Higher Education Dr Ibrahim Hassan stated that the programme would greatly influence people’s education, and the launch would mark a memorable day in President Solih’s administration.

The minister also declared that all institutions providing higher education offered much aid in offering these opportunities.

All degree courses from MNU and Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), and a substantial amount of course fees for private colleges will be funded by the government.

Foreign university programmes conducted in the Maldives would also be funded by the government under the same guideline.

The government has designated a budget of MVR 50 million to fund the programme. How the payments are to be settled is yet to be affirmed.
