Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom departed to Malaysia on Wednesday, on the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamed.

This is the first meeting between the two, since Dr Mahathir's re-election as the Prime Minister on May 2018.

A close ally of Gayoom, the 92-year-old was re-elected while the former president was serving a prison sentence over allegedly attempting to overthrow his estranged half-brother and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

According to Maumoon Reform Movement’s (MRM) spokesperson, Thazmeel Abdul Samadh, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sent a special letter to be handed over to the Malaysian Prime Minister.

President Solih, however, has not made an official visit to Malaysia since coming into office in November 2018.

Faris Maumoon, son of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and the MP for the constituency of Dhiggaru, recently met with Prime Minister Mahathir on December 2018.

Gayoom was accompanied by the former Vice President of PPM, Aminath Nadira, and Abdulla Kamaaludheen.
