Elections Commission (EC), on Wednesday, announced that ballot boxes would be placed in 39 resorts throughout the country for the upcoming parliamentary election.

EC member Ahmed Akram stated that the commission decided to place ballot boxes in resorts with over 50 eligible voters, after consultation with the Ministry of Tourism and Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI).

Polling booths will be placed in eight resorts for the first time.

“Based on past experiences, the Elections Commission has decided to place polling booths in resorts with more than 50 voters”, said Akram.

During the 2018 presidential election, EC faced backlash for placing ballot boxes only in resorts with more than 100 eligible voters.

Additionally, Akram mentioned that EC would shortly announce names of the resorts where polling booths are to be placed.

The Elections Commission had declared that 264,589 people have the right to vote in the Parliamentary Elections scheduled for April 6.
