The Criminal Court, on Sunday, added ten days to the remand period of former Chief of Staff at the presidential residence of Muliaage, Ahmed Mustafa.

The police arrested Mustafa at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Saturday upon his return to Maldives after reportedly spending a long duration in Bangkok, Thailand.

Mustafa has been accused of facilitating corruption while leasing a local island for tourism and using his position to threaten witnesses who were to provide testimony in the ensuing investigation.

Mustafa is also currently under investigation regarding a Mercedes-Benz S600 gifted to Maldives by Saudi Arabia in August 2018. The former chief of staff had released the vehicle, which was intended for the then President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, from Customs after registering it under his name.

Mustafa had also served as Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Tourism during Yameen’s presidency.
