National Institute of Education (NIE) will introduce Dhivehi Literature as a separate subject in 2020.

NIE's Education Development Officer Azra Thaufeeq announced Tuesday that Dhivehi Literature would be introduced as an optional subject for Key Stages 4 and 5 next year.

Dhivehi Literature 1 will be implemented in Key Stage 4, which is taught in Grades 8-10, while Dhivehi Literature 2 is to be introduced in Key Stage 5 taught in Grades 11-12.

"We believe that introducing Dhivehi Literature [as a separate subject] would increase students' interest in the local language," said Azra, adding that textbooks have already been compiled for both students and teachers.

While Dhivehi Literature was earlier planned to be introduced this year, it was delayed over challenges in providing sufficient information to relevant parties.

Azra also noted that NIE is yet to formulate examination formats for the new subject.

Dhivehi Literature is already taught in some chapters under the Dhivehi Language syllabus. However, there has been high demand to teach local literature in more depth as a separate subject.
