In a historic move, female soldiers have been appointed as the personal bodyguards of First Lady Fazna Ahmed.
This marks the first time in Maldives for female military officers to be appointed as such to a First Lady.
The move came to public light when First Lady Fazna was accompanied by a female soldier of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), to the ceremony held late Wednesday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Aminiya School.
According to local media Mihaaru, the First Lady's bodyguard team will comprise mostly of women, while her security team also includes male soldiers.
While women were rarely appointed as bodyguards in Maldives, there are several trained female officers on MNDF's team which is tasked with providing security to top statespersons.
