Will take action against abuser of elderly man: Minister Shidhatha

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef announced that measures will be taken against the individual who attacked a mentally unstable elderly man inside a café in Addu City.

A video of the attack that took place in Maahera Café in Hithadhoo went viral on social media on Saturday, instigating public outrage at the attacker.

Locals condemned the video as a violent and inhuman act, calling for authorities to investigate the matter seriously.

In a tweet regarding the incident, Gender Minister Shidhatha condemned the attack saying it was unacceptable under any circumstance. She also urged for the culprit of this cruel act to be punished accordingly.

Additionally, Acting Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed tweeted a statement announcing that the assault was being investigated by Addu City Police Department.

The video depicts a middle-aged man assaulting an elderly man around the age of 70. The man can be seen physically and verbally assaulting the elderly victim popularly known as 'Thuhthu', who works as a security officer in Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.

The elderly man is reportedly mentally unstable.

Bystanders did not attempt to stop the assault as it was taking place, and it was evident by the video.
