Former Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb, on Friday, was brought to Male’ for emergency medical care after fainting in his cell at Maafushi prison.

Velidhoo MP and Vice President of the Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD), Yameen Rasheed, tweeted regarding the matter, stating that Adeeb sustained a forehead injury and developed a nosebleed after he fainted.

MP Yameen further stated that members of the Maldives Correctional Services stationed at Maafushi did not provide medical assistance to Adeeb until there was no other option.

Adeeb had been prescribed strong medication to dissolve kidney stones which may cause side effects such as dizziness, stated his family.

Adeeb, who was a key figure in the formation of MTD, was treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and transferred back to prison on Friday evening.

The former Vice-President's family issued a statement condemning his shift back to detention and claiming that Adeeb was injured because of his premature transfer back to prison.

According to Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, Adeeb was shifted back to Maafushi Prison following surgery as his doctor did not extend his advice to keep in a homely environment beyond December 24.

Adeeb's wife refuted this and claimed that his doctor had advised 6-8 weeks of post-surgery recovery and was released on house arrest until January 28.
