The Attorney General’s (AG) Office released a statement on Wednesday, seeking public opinion regarding the Decentralisation Act.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s First 100-Days pledges include the restoration of powers to local councils, which were curtailed in the previous administration.

The AG’s Office stated that it was important to discuss the issue with relevant authorities and to invite public opinion regarding the matter.

The deadline of the survey is February 3.

The AG’s Office revealed that they have also held talks with the representatives of government ministries, independent firms and civil associations on amending the Decentralisation Act. The Office also extended the opportunity for councilts to give their input on the matter.

The Office has met with relevant authorities across the Maldives to review the matter. The Attorney General is working with the United Nations Development Programme, President’s Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Local Government Authority to amend the Decentralisation Act.
