Elections Commission (EC) on Monday registered the new political party, Labour and Social Democratic Party, which is led by Lawyer Abdulla Haseen.

The Labour Party was presented its registration document at a ceremony held at the EC.

A former member of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Haseen held Labour Party’s general meeting with 317 members present, at Dharubaaruge convention centre on January 11.

During the meeting, the members approved the official colour and logo of the party. Labour Party's official colour comprises of red, black and white, while the logo depicts five pillars supporting a dome.

The party has elected 15 members as its temporary leadership, including Haseen and Mauroof Zakir, an activist who campaigns for workers' rights in the tourism sector.

Speaking at the general meeting, Haseen declared that Labour Party will continue to fight for the rights of labourers. Haseen stated that the rest of the political parties are working for the benefits of political leaders and businessmen, while the Labour Party will stand up for the working class of Maldives.

“Workers have been left out of the picture. We’ve created this party in order to resolve this issue. It is always the employers' rights that are protected, but we will advocate for the rights of workers", said Haseen.

The Labour and Social Democratic Party is the eighth political party to be registered in Maldives.
