Former Acting Police Commissioner Abdulla Nawaz announced that he will be running for Galolhu South constituency in the upcoming parliament elections.

Nawaz, who served 28 years in Maldives Police Service, joined Jumhoory Party on Tuesday night.

In a speech he gave after signing for the party, Nawaz explained that he is appearing in the political scene to serve the country instead of sitting idle at home. He believes that the best way to serve the country would be by running for the parliament.

“If I get Jumhooree Party’s ticket, I am thinking of running for Galolhu South constituency”, Navaz said.

Additionally, Nawaz highlighted that the parliament should consist of competent and able individuals. He also noted that citizens have every right to serve in the parliament.

According to Nawaz, the parliamentary elections held on April 7 would show shifts in the political scene of Maldives, and emphasized on the importance of electing sincere people who would work in the best interest of the country.

Nawaz was assigned the position of Police Acting Commissioner after the previous Commissioner, Ahmed Areef was dismissed, for attempting to implement the infamous Supreme Court order to release certain political prisoners on February 1, 2018.

There were accusations of Police being involved in unlawful activities during the tenure of Abdulla Nawaz. In the midst of these accusations, former President Abdulla Yaameen Abdul Gayoom fell from power, and Nawaz was removed from the position.

Afterwards, Nawaz was assigned as Deputy Minister of Environment.

He left the position of Deputy Minister following the inauguration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
